A body was found in the canal at Dobson's Lock, Apperley Bridge, last night.
The discovery was made by a jogger at about 9.30pm.
A fire crew from Bingley helped retrieve the deceased and police cordoned off the area for a scenes of crime team to investigate.
Police have not released the identity of the person.
Underwater search teams have recently been trawling the Leeds and Liverpool Canal around Apperley Bridge in the hunt for a missing Greengates man.
Derrick Fisher, 57, went missing from his home in Springdale Crescent, Greengates, at about midnight last Thursday.
Mr Fisher, who was described as 'vulnerable' by police, is 5ft 5in tall, of medium build, with short fair hair, which is greying. He is believed to have been wearing a blue checked shirt when he was last seen.
Police said there is a possibility Mr Fisher had travelled to North Yorkshire, although he was not thought to have left his home in a vehicle.
Officers conducting enquiries to locate him are extremely concerned for his welfare.
