TALENTED Menston footballer Luke Hendrie is following in his father John’s footsteps on the football field.
The former Bradford City youngster, who is now with Manchester United, has been selected in the England U-16 squad.
A 15 year-old pupil at St Mary’s RC School, Menston, Luke has grown up in a sporting family. Dad John is a former professional footballer and manager having seen service with the likes of Leeds United, Bradford City and Middlesbrough as a player and Barnsley as a manager.
Mum Linda is also keen on sport having taken part in a number of marathons and also playing rounders for a local ladies team.
Elder brother Joe, currently travelling the world, was making his way with Guiseley AFC Reserves after a stint with Otley Town and younger brother Jordan is with Bradford City. He also has a sister Lauren.
Luke captained the Manchester United U-16s in a recent international tournament. He is the third St Mary’s student in the last three years to play for England U-16s or U-19s following in the footsteps of Aidan White (Leeds United) and Tom Taiwo (then Leeds United, currently Chelsea but on loan to Carlisle).
Luke’s first game with the England squad will be the international against Wales on Thursday, October 15, at Huish Park.
Dad John will be looking forward to the clash with his home country Scotland on November 27 while there is a third game against Northern Ireland on November 5.
David Geldart, Assistant Headteacher at St Mary’s said of the school’s former Jamie Payne Ross Award winner: “Luke is an outstanding young man who thoroughly deserves his success. His attitude is an example to others in all the things he does. Talented, hard working and determined, he remains modest and unassuming.”
