Ilkley Grammar School students in 1951
Children from Ilkley Grammar School had a fun day out when they attended the Festival of Britain Land Travelling Exhibition in 1951.
The festival was designed as “a tonic to the nation” after the long war years. It was based in London but a land travelling exhibition was created to allow the whole country to take part. Leeds was one of the four provincial cities chosen to host the event.
The festival was opened by King George VI, who declared it to be “a visible sign of national achievement and confidence”.
