City Varieties Music Hall hosted its first ever Summer School for young people last week. The Music Hall has a rich history of performance and Rewind/Remix fused that colourful past with the present, ending in a showcase performance on the world-famous stage.
“It was a fantastic week,” said Grace Dean, heritage learning assistant at City Varieties. “The talent the group displayed was truly incredible. I never fail to be amazed by the skills of the young people I work with in our theatres.”
Twenty-nine children aged seven to 11 spent the week working with local artists learning circus skills, dance, prop-making, puppetry, film and the art of DJ-ing and remixing music to create a mix of music hall and modern songs.
Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for leisure and skills is the chairman of the board at Leeds Grand Theatre & Opera House.
She said: “Last year we had Her Royal Highness the Queen in this very theatre announcing Leeds’ commitment to being a Child Friendly City. This is a perfect example of what we can achieve to support this and make Leeds a city where young people’s creativity is allowed to flourish.”
The learning team at City Varieties & Leeds Grand Theatre work with schools, specialist interest societies, community groups as well as the general public.
