Historic buildings across Wharfedale, Aireborough and Horsforth will again be on the map in the national Heritage Open Days event next month.

The four-day celebration of England’s architecture and culture will again open the doors to some of the hidden historical gems in this area, and give people a chance to learn more about their local heritage.

Many of the events held nationally offer free access to buildings normally closed to the public, or those which charge for entry.

Big attractions such as Bradford Industrial Museum will be putting on special events as part of the open days.

Locally, St Margaret’s Parish Church in Horsforth will be the first building opening its doors for the open days, on Thursday September 12 The building was designed by renowned Victorian architect HL Pearson, and features fine stained glass, as well as carved stone and gilded reredos designed by the son of the architect.

A guided walk around the historic centre of Guiseley, starting from The Wells on Springfield Road at 10.30am, will take place on September 13. Contact Jeff Halden on (01943) 876713 or e-mail jeffhalden@hotmail.com to book.

From September 13 to 15, heritage enthusiasts will be invited to visit All Saints Parish Church, Kirkgate, Otley, see sections of Saxon crosses found on site, and a display of historical documents.

The White House, Chevin Forest Park, Johnny Lane, Otley, will have displays about the history of the park, from prehistoric times to the present day, while “hidden treasures” of Otley Museum will be on show on September 13 and 14.

High Royds Memorial Chapel and Garden, Buckle Lane, Menston, will open its doors on September 14 and 15.

Meanwhile, High Royds Sports and Social Club situated in the former Victorian psychiatric hospital itself, will play host to a display on its history.

Otley Courthouse will again be offering visitors a chance to see around the Victorian police house, cell block and magistrates’ courts, on September 14.

On the same day, Farfield Friends Meeting House, Addingham, will offer local people another chance to look around the unaltered late 17th century one-room early Quaker meeting house.

Rawdon Quaker Meeting House, Quakers Lane, Rawdon, will also open its doors, on Sunday September 15.

Aireborough Historical Society will play host to an open day at Yeadon Town Hall on September 14.
