More than 50 acts are joining forces in Bradford for the Shuttle Shuffle Festival, a celebration of music and arts.
The family-friendly festival, running on August 17 and 18, is in aid of the Piece Project, a charitable organisation aimed at creating opportunities for people to come together and understand and value others through music.
DJ and filmmaker Rory Hoy will be playing a DJ set at the festival and will be showing and talking about his award-winning film, Autism And Me.
“I’m honoured to be taking part in this unique urban festival to raise money and awareness of the valuable work done by the Piece Project, which also involves people from disadvantaged communities,” says Rory “I hope in showing my film we can raise awareness of autism and I hope everyone can have fun dancing to my beats.”
Also appearing are international guests Salam Musik, a young Malaysian ska band self-funding their way through Europe.
“The courage of these young Malaysian musicians is exactly what the Piece Project is all about,” says festival organiser Danny Khan.
The festival also showcases contemporary art in a studio room that will become a piece of live art painted throughout the weekend by Bradford artist Jay Pee.
“I’m proud to be involved in things made possible by the new generation of creatives,” says Jay. “I think I’m still a ‘new blood’ after a year of freelance and I’m enjoying watching the people around me grow and develop as creative thinkers and doers. This festival is a prime example of that.”
Music acts taking part include Voices Of The Day Soul Choir led by the Reverend Chunky, who will be leading communal singing sessions, and luthier Colin Kendal, showing his handcrafted stringed instruments.
The festival is organised by four musical communities – Bradford’s Topic Folk Club; Eclectic Rhythm, a new website and graphic design company with a love for music and fashion; Yorkshire Gig Guide, a group of enthusiasts supporting grass roots music in Yorkshire; and Factory Street Studios in Bradford, run by Alex and Amy Eden.
The music hub, offering practising, recording and gig space for musicians, is the base for the Piece Project and the venue for the Shuttle Shuffle Festival. The venue includes three stages and several rooms where other events will take place.
Most bands playing at the festival are from the region. They include Top Whack, The Rudiments, Vinyl Casino, Your Illuminations, Jon Palmer, Strid, Eddie Lawler, Traffic Wire, Andy Doonan, Mestisa, Kayla Kavagnah and Stand Alone.
Workshops will include a songwriting programme led by Vinnie Whitehouse, who will explore lyrics and verses and share his approach by using hip hop and beat rhythms, and Joe Solo who will explore the art of the protest song.
Martin Christie Poet and the Loops will lead a workshop on the spoken word, while Cleve Freckleton, aka the Rev Chunky, will lead a communal singing session encouraging people to enjoy their voices and have the confidence to sing.
Eclectic Rhythm are hosting four rooms. As well as selling a range of goods including prints and T-shirts, the ER Collective will see artist Johnny Packham and guests producing a one off large-scale painting covering all four walls of one of the studio rooms, and getting visitors involved with a range of drawing games.
Room Three will see Norris-Green Design showcasing their bespoke and contemporary furniture, as well as producing live 3D prints, Room Four will showcase “the best motion graphics and short film that Yorkshire has to offer”.
