A soulful and moving drama from Hong Kong, A Simple Life, is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday at 8pm at Ilkley Playhouse.
Ah Tao has been working as a servant for one family for 60 years. Only one member of the family, film producer Roger, now remains in Hong Kong. He has taken Ah Tao for granted all his life, but after she is taken ill he begins to recognise how much she means to him. When she announces she wants to move permanently into a nursing home Roger finds himself giving ever more time and attention to her needs.
Subtle and never lapsing into the sentimental, the film features one of Hong Kong’s biggest stars, Andy Lau (House Of Flying Daggers) as Roger. Former pop singer Deanie Ip, who plays Ah Tao, is actually rather younger than her role for which she won seven Best Actress awards around the world.
Guest tickets for non-members of the Film Society cost £4 (£2 for students) and can be reserved by telephoning Richard Fort on 01535 653471. Further information on the current season is available online at ilkleyfilmsociety.org. uk.
