Casting has been announced for hit comedy One Man, Two Guvnors, coming to Bradford this summer.
The National Theatre’s multi award-winning production – a West End and Broadway hit starring James Corden – is the comic tale of Francis Henshall who, fired from his skiffle band, becomes minder to Roscoe Crabbe. But Roscoe is really Rachel, posing as her own dead brother – who’s been killed by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers.
Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and takes a job with one Stanley Stubbers – but to prevent discovery, he must keep his two guvnors apart. Are you keeping up?
The show has been described as a glorious celebration of British comedy, a laugh-out-loud mix of satire, songs, slapstick and glittering one-liners.
The acclaimed production is based on Richard Bean’s version of Carlo Goldoni’s classic Italian comedy, The Servant Of Two Masters.
Shaun Williamson, best known as hapless Barry Evans in EastEnders, will play Charlie Clench, alongside West End star Gavin Spokes, playing the central role of loveable chancer Francis Henshall. He previously played the role in the West End. Shaun made regular appearances in Ricky Gervais’s TV comedy Extras and Life’s Too Short – proving a good sport by playing himself and being constantly referred to as “Barry” rather than Shaun.
He last appeared at the Alhambra in Saturday Night Fever, in 2006, when he declared that the show had given him a real taste for musical theatre. “Ideally I’d combine it with serious drama and singing but if someone put a gun to my head and said, ‘Choose singing or acting’ it would have to be singing. It’s my passion,” he said.
“When I left drama school I was gobbled up by telly and spent ten years in EastEnders. It opened doors for me but when you’ve played a character for that long it can be hard to move on.” Emma Barton, who played Honey Mitchell in EastEnders, plays Dolly. Her theatre work includes Roxie Hart in Chicago, which came to the Alhambra.
Jasmyn Banks, who was Alice Branning in EastEnders, plays Pauline Clench.
- One Man, Two Guvnors runs at the Alhambra from July 21 to 26. For tickets, call (01274) 432000.
