Ilkley Grammar School is looking forward to welcoming local choir Cantores Olicanae in May, when they will hold a music workshop in the school. The workshop will take place on Saturday, May 10, at the Grammar School and is free to take part. Other than a love of singing, no other musical experience is required. A place can be secured by contacting Hilary on (01535) 609209.
The workshop will have a jazz feel and will be a warm up event before the choir’s concert in June. Sponsored by Ilkley Parish Council, the workshop will encourage having fun with rhythm and syncopation as well as singing some of the jazz numbers from their upcoming concert.
Barbara Grant from the choir said: “The workshop in May will focus on fun, enjoying the experience and joy of singing jazz!”
The choir recently featured in Ilkley Grammar School’s production, 7 Ages of Man, where they sang with the school in the final number of the show.
Ali Kaye, business and finance director, was more than happy to help the local choir find a venue for the event. “We were thrilled recently to have the opportunity to provide the Ilkley Carnival Committee with a venue for judging the poster competition,” she said. “We really enjoy connecting with the local community and the music workshop is a great way to do it. We are hoping that even some of our staff and students will embrace the opportunity to sing with the choir!”
The June concert, An American Evening, will be held on June 14 at St John’s Church in Ben Rhydding. The evening, which starts at 7.30pm, will include songs by Duke Ellington, Aaron Copeland and Harry Burleigh.
