Next month there will be a four-night performance of Harvey Fierstein’s Torch Song Trilogy in the Wildman Studio from June 24-27 at 7.30pm.
A funny and poignant personal story, it chronicles torch song-singing Jewish drag queen Arnold’s search for love, respect and tradition in a world where he feels like an outsider. From Arnold’s hilarious steps towards domestic bliss with a reluctant schoolteacher to his first truly promising love affair with a young fashion model, Arnold’s greatest challenge remains his complicated relationship with his mother.
But armed with a smart sense of humour and piercing wit, Arnold continues to test the commonly accepted terms of endearment in a story that everyone can relate to that confirms that happiness is well worth carrying a torch for. Set in New York in the 1970s and 80s, Torch Song Trilogy is a funny, moving and thought-provoking play.
The next production in the Wharfeside Theatre is Shakespeare in Hollywood by Ken Ludwig and runs from July 9 to 19. Set in Hollywood in the 1930s, the hilarious farce takes place on the Warner Bros’ set of a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
An impressive cast including Dick Powell, James Cagney and Joe E Brown has been assembled. However, the magic of the movies is surpassed by some unexplained enchantment that causes the Bard’s most famous fairies – Oberon and Puck – to materialise mysteriously on set and get caught up in the wonderful world of showbusiness. Using their magical love potion, the pair cause plenty of mischievous comic mayhem among the blonde bombshells, movie moguls, matinee idols and hopeful starlets in glitzy, glamorous Hollywood.
