International artists performing for Ilkley Concert Club in the season 2009-10 will continue to delight audiences from around West Yorkshire.
Despite the credit crunch and rising costs the club has managed to retain 2008-09 ticket prices for its new season.
Traditionally the first concert is a piano recital and on Wednesday, October 7, the Russian pianist, Yevgeny Subdin will perform works by Scarlatti, Haydn, Chopin, Medtner and Prokofiev.
This artist showed an exceptional musical talent from an early age and entered the music school of the St Petersburg Conservatory at the age of 17. He now resides in London and has studied with Murray Perahia and Stephen Hough.
His repertoire covers a wide range and his recordings of Tchaikovsky’s and Medtner’s first piano concertos were Gramophone Magazine’s CD of the month.
Following the piano recital, on November 11, is the Wihan Quartet, named after the Bohemian cellist, Hanus Wihan, a friend of Dvorák.
The quartet has an outstanding reputation for the interpretation of Czech music and, having won the London International String Quartet Competition in 1985, has carved out an impressive international career. They will perform works by Panufnik, Dvorák and Beethoven.
Those of you who follow the BBC Young Musician of the Year may remember horn player, David Pyatt, who won first place in 1988 at the age of 14. He is now the principal horn player of the LSO.
His Horn Trio will perform works by Schumann, Ethel Smyth, Hans Gál and Brahms on December 2. Other members of the Trio are Leon McCawley, who won second prize in the Leeds International Piano Competition and Lucy Gould, who so thrilled audiences in Ikley last season in Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time The club welcomes in the New Year with the outrageous and completely wild and deeply imaginative Red Priest, founded in 1997, and named after the flame-haired priest Antonio Vivaldi.
Red Priest played for the club in its diamond jubilee year and will be making a welcome return. The ensemble will play music by Vivaldi, JS Bach, Tartini and many others on January 13. The soprano, Elizabeth Watts, graduated with distinction from the Royal College of Music in 2005. She is in much demand as a recitalist and opera singer at many of Europe’s leading venues. On February 10 she will be joined on the concert platform by the pianist Simon Lepper, who also studied at the Royal College of Music, where he won the Gerald Moore award and the accompanist prize in the Kathleen Ferrier Competition. Together they will perform lieder by Schubert, Richard Strauss, Samuel Barber and Wolf.
Still in her early 20s, the violinist Chloë Hanslip is already established as an international artist and has played in several prestigious music festivals in Europe. Pianist Ashley Wass will join her on March 10 to perform works by Erwin Schulhoff, Beethoven, Franck and Szymanowski.
In 1997 Ashley Wass was the first British pianist to win First Prize at the London International Piano Competition. He is a talented soloist and an accomplished chamber musician.
There is a welcome return to Ilkley for the Sacconi Quartet who last performed in the King’s Hall in November 2006. The Sacconi play regularly at the Wigmore Hall and host The Sacconi Chamber Music Festival in May at Folkestone.
On April 14 the quartet will be joined by Andrew Berridge who plays viola in the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Together they will perform Haydn, Smetana and Brahms.
Formed in 2005 to take up residency in South Yorkshire with Music in the Round, Ensemble 360 brings together instrumentalists from around the world.
Eleven musicians form the core of the ensemble, based around the traditional string quartet and wind quintet – plus a double bass and piano. The final concert of the season takes place on May 5 and will include music by Mozart, Nielsen, Martinu and Spohr.
Chairman David Pyett said: “With a reputation as one of the very best chamber music clubs in the country the choice of artistes and music for the following season is always of critical importance. This coming season of concerts is no exception.
“We are delighted that 2009/2010 will be bringing some very remarkable performers to Ilkley. One of these, David Pyatt, won the BBC Young Musician of the Year at the age of 14 – and I regret that there is no spelling mistake and he is no relation.
“This concert is a good example of the programming of unusual but lovely works which have been unjustly neglected, and I am sure that once again we shall have some wonderful evenings with music covering many genre and written over the past 300 years !”
The Ilkley Chamber Concert series is usually heavily over-subscribed and anyone interested should contact The Booking Secretary, Ilkley Concert Club, 22, Sunset Drive, Ben Rhydding, Ilkley, LS29 8LS; telephone 01943 609744.
