Following the disappointment of losing in the final of their own five-a-side tournament a week earlier, Chris Archer, Paul Kipling and Jamie Houlders took two strong Burley Trojans teams to the Harrogate Six-A-Side Tournament.
Sporting their Dale Eddison sponsored kit, the teams – named Wharfe and Dale – battled well through six hard league fixtures.
Dale narrowly missed out on progressing to the semi-finals, losing out on goal difference, while the Wharfe side made it through, finishing second in their league to Dewsbury, who were much fancied having had both their teams progress comfortably to the last four.
Wharfe’s semi-final was a short game of seven minutes, with both teams cancelling each other out.
The game continued into a three-minute golden-goal period, which also finished in stalemate, so a dramatic penalty shoot-out was needed to decide the place in the final.
Despite the smaller six-a-side goals, the quality of penalties from both sides were outstanding, and it took a great left-handed save from the imposing Burley keeper to separate the teams.
The final was against Dewsbury, and this time Burley Trojans under-12s came flying out of the blocks.
A break down in a Dewsbury move resulted in Max Turner picking the ball up in his own half, gliding past two players and rifling a left-footed shot into the bottom of Dewsbury’s goal, Burley then holding strong to win.
