Families joined the Friends of Ilkley Moor’s (FOIM) project officer in a walk exploring wildlife on the moor.
The latest in this year’s series of special events and walks on Ilkley Moor, children learned how to take readings on temperature, wind speed and direction FOIM project officer, Tracy Gray, who led the walk, said: “The event was organised for families to encourage young people to discover and explore wildlife on the moor in a fun and exciting way”
As well as recording environmental information, participants learnt how to build a survival den from natural materials on the moor, about the different habitats, and explored the wildlife found in these.
The wildlife discovered included the plants, trees, lichens, fungi, and animals found in the water, heathland and peat bogs.
Unfortunately the walk was cut short by a thunderstorm, but not before the party had learnt a substantial amount about wildlife on the moor.
The Friends are considering running more regular Ilkley Explorers sessions for young people if funding is secured.
The programme of events and six Heritage Walks can be downloaded from ilkleymoor.org or collected from Ilkley Visitor Information Centre, the library, shops and cafes.
