A leafy strip of parkland off Ilkley town centre will be centre stage on Saturday night for a Roaring 1920s theme sound and light spectacle.

The Ilkley Summer Festival Son et Lumiere this year makes its return to Mill Ghyll, between Wells Walk and Wells Promenade, with a theme of Gatsby and All That Jazz.

The illuminations put up on The Grove and other town centre streets last year have now been extended to Mill Ghyll, and will turn the ghyll into a mysterious and glittering wonderland for the event.

Characters in costume, jazz musicians and singers will also be appearing in Mill Ghyll from shortly after 8pm.

The other major event in the festival programme this weekend will be the annual Ilkley Flower and Vegetable Show, taking place in the Clarke Foley Centre on Saturday, open to the public from 2pm.

Central street The Grove was taken over for two spectacular musical events last weekend.

Festival favourite Dominic Halpin, with band The Honey Bs, made his return to the Dolce Vita cabaret on Saturday night, along with local band Five Dollar Shoes. As well as those who paid to get into the show and seating area, revellers gathered on the sidelines and danced in the street.

The following day, families made the most of the sunny weather to enjoy a party on The Grove with tribute band Abba Revival.

Money raised at both events, which is still being counted up, will be donated to the British Heart Foundation and The Haven breast cancer charity.

The festival events continue this Sunday (August 25) with a carvery lunch and tea room set up in the nostalgic surroundings of the Winter Garden, Station Road, between 11am and 5pm.

Still to come in the week ahead is a Grand Variety Show at the King’s Hall on Wednesday. Music hall laughter and song can be expected from Caroline Fields – from the Leeds City Varieties – Steve Barclay from TV’s New Comedians, and pianist David Carter.

The show runs from 2pm to 5pm, and tickets cost £6.50. Contact Ilkley Visitor Information Centre on (01943) 602319 for details.

Another Ilkley Heritage Guided Walk will take place on Wednesday afternoon, this time exploring Prehistoric Rombalds Moor. Walkers should meet at the Cow and Calf car park at 2pm.
