A Wharfedale MP has been teaching some of his youngest constituents about the intricacies of politics.
Greg Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West) led ‘mini Parliament’ classes at Ashfield Primary School, in Otley, last week.
During the sessions Mr Mulholland explained to the Year 6 pupils how the upper and lower Houses work and gave examples of the duties of a constituency MP.
He also gave them the chance to debate and vote on the motion That This House Believes That Levels Matter, which scrutinised the value of grading and levels for primary school children.
Speeches for and against the proposal were led by Prime Minister for the day, Poppy Jopson, and Opposition Leader Hannah Berry, with the motion eventually carried by a large majority.
Ashfield Primary’s headteacher, Sybil Parker, said: “The children really enjoyed learning about Parliament and embraced the opportunity to put their debating skills into practice.
“They grew in confidence as they debated and the motion, proposed by Poppy Jopson, was carried despite the best efforts of the opposition, led by Hannah Berry.
“Mr Mulholland encouraged everyone to join in.”
The MP added: “It was fantastic to see Year 6 pupils at Ashfield Primary participating in the debate with such fervour and enthusiasm.
“These mini Parliaments are a great opportunity for MPs to interact with primary school pupils and teach them about the workings of Parliament and make them engage with politics.
“I would like to congratulate Poppy Jopson and Hannah Berry on their powerful and motivating speeches on the importance of levels.”
