An Otley couple have become the first in Leeds to have a same-sex wedding.
Julie Carrack and Vicky Parkinson were declared wife and wife at Leeds Town Hall on Friday.
The couple had picked the first available date but, with it being nearly a week after The Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act took effect, had no idea they would be local pioneers.
It was only when they arrived at the registry office for their ceremony that they were told their union represented a first for Leeds.
Speaking to the Wharfedale & Aireborough Observer just after the wedding Julie, 43, said: “I’m elated. We were very surprised we were the first in Leeds given that it’s been about a week since it became law and Leeds is a big place.
“We’d decided in January that we’d get married and went in and asked for any available date, but had no idea it would be of any significance.
“Gay marriage is legal in many countries now and I think people will soon just see it as part of the norm.”
The couple, who are keeping their own names, enjoyed a reception meal at Korks Wine Bar in Otley and plan to honeymoon in Malta later in the year.
Forty-one-year-old Vicky, a teacher who hails originally from Blackpool, said: “It was a big and very nice surprise to be told we’re the first – we’ve made history in Leeds and it’s great for Otley.
“This is about equal opportunities and two people who love each other – why not?"
