Ilkley Labour Party was this week marking the 20th anniversary of former Keighley MP Bob Cryer’s death at the age of 59 in a car crash on April 12, 1994.
Bob was MP for Keighley from 1974 to 1983 and for Bradford South from 1987 to 1994.
He lost the General Election of 1983 in the Keighley Constituency when Ilkley joined the Constituency for the first time.
Keighley’s Labour Prospective Parliamentary Candidate John Grogan said: “Bob was the only politician in the last 50 years to hold Keighley Constituency against the national trend which he did for the Labour Party by just 78 votes in the 1979 General Election.
“He was a forthright speaker in Parliament where he developed a reputation as being both independent-minded and also an expert on parliamentary procedure.
He added: “It was entirely appropriate that in November 1989 when Parliament was first televised he was the first MP other than the Speaker to appear on our screens.”
Ilkley Labour Party will hold a one-minute silence in honour of Bob Cryer before their monthly meeting today, Thursday.
