Caroline Hargreaves, whose GCSE English Literature paper was one of the top five scoring in the country, was among the prize winners at Prince Henry's Grammar School.

The Alice Macgill Memorial Shield, presented for the first time in memory of the former student who tragically died in the 2004 Asian Tsunami disaster, was awarded to Sadie MacNaughton.

Head teacher John Steel praised last year's best ever GCSE and A Level results, awards and the school's international links in his address to the audience.

"It's incredible to be the head of a school like this," he said.

The school is close to raising £4,000 in their charity appeal for Martin House Hospice.

The school's soul band performed four numbers. Former music teacher Phil Reading returned to conduct two songs.

The head boy, girl and their deputies spoke of the school's academic achievements, sporting success, prom and school trips. A film made by and featuring students was shown.
