Councillors in Guiseley are pushing for safety improvements to a busy junction in the town.

The ward councillors for the area used a full council meeting in Leeds to highlight the need for improvements to the Station Hotel junction.

The junction, where Oxford Road and Victoria Road meet the A65 Otley Road, is close to two schools as well as houses and businesses.

Guiseley and Rawdon councillor Pat Latty said: “We need to ensure that this junction is safe for the large number of pedestrians who cross it every day.

“It is particularly dangerous for the large numbers of children that have to cross here going to and from school and for the residents of the several retirement properties in close proximity to the junction.

“The A65 is a very busy road, so we need to find a compromise that will boost safety whilst still allowing traffic to traverse this major junction.

“We are working with the highways department to ensure that a suitable solution is found as soon as possible that meets the need of local people.”

Fellow ward councillor Paul Wadsworth added: “We received confirmation at Full Council that the money is in place to carry out the required work on the junction, and that this should start in the autumn.

“What we need to do now is ensure a solution is put in place that safeguards the safety of pedestrians without throttling the flow of traffic on this major route in and out of Leeds, something we will be liaising closely with Highways engineers about over the coming months.”
