Recently I was contacted by a resident asking me to support the ‘No More Page 3’ campaign to get The Sun newspaper to remove the topless models from the paper.
As a councillor I receive many requests to support many causes and campaigns. The ‘No more Page 3’ is a campaign I had not heard of but I shall be offering my full support to this worthy and worthwhile campaign.
As a father with a 16-year-old daughter I know how much pressure girls and young woman have to contend with and the many influences that affect their confidence, body image and self-worth.
The Sun purports to be a family newspaper yet its continued casual attitude to Page 3 does it a disservice to woman. In 21st century Britain girls and woman deserve to be treated equally, with respect and on merit and we must continue to strive to abolish, breakdown and smash through the barriers stopping woman from achieving their full potential whatever that may be.
This campaign has wide support from girls and woman’s organisation and from politicians from across the political spectrum and I hope your readers will join with me in signing the petition. Go to NomorePage3.org to show your support.
Councillor Sandy Lay, Otley and Yeadon Leeds City Council and Otley Town Councillor, Danefield Ward
