Football fans in Guiseley are being urged to beat the players in a fundraising bid to help a little boy to walk.

Guiseley AFC has set supporters a unique challenge – to sweat more than the players in a Walk for Wesley challenge.

The club will record how many calories fans burn in walking or cycling to Nethermoor for the match against Gloucester City this Saturday.

The figure will then be compared with the number the Guiseley players will use up during the match.

In conjunction with Guiseley Lions, the club is aiming to use the challenge to support local youngster Wesley Knight, who was born prematurely and has cerebral palsy, and is unlikely to be able to walk without Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) procedure.

Wesley’s family need to raise a total of £90,000 to cover the cost of the operation in the United States and three years of specialist intensive physio-therapy.

The club is asking fans to buy a £5 Walk for Wesley voucher, which will record how far they have walked. It will also give a discount on admission to the ground, a free snack and entry into a special half-time draw if the fans beat the players in the calorie challenge. Every penny from the voucher sales will go to ‘Wesley’s Wish’.

Chairman Phil Rogerson said: “It’s a great opportunity for the club and fans to support Wesley’s Wish and hopefully we will see some new faces at the ground too.”

Walk for Wesley vouchers will be sold outside the ground before the kick-off tomorrow.
