An Otley hair salon has been proving it is a cut above the rest when it comes to supporting WaterAid.
The owner of Cutting House, Jayne Cunningham, led by example by completing a 100-mile sponsored bicycle ride in Suffolk in April.
Then this week the Aveda salon held a ‘bake-off’ featuring an array of brightly-decorated, specially-baked Victoria sponge cakes, which raised more than £600. Staff also donated all of their tips last month to Earth Month, which is when Aveda’s salons, spas and stores work together to raise money for WaterAid – whose water supply and sanitation projects save lives around the world.
Cutting House manager Helen Cooper said: “We’ve had a brilliant time baking and supporting Aveda Earth Month and WaterAid.”
Representatives from local businesses including Pauline Coultas from Sweet Treats, Trevor Backhouse from Patisserie Viennoise, Diane Broadbent from the Traditional Sweet Shop, Tom Hatley from Christopher Little, and Chris Payne from Korks judged the baking competition.
Verity Glover was declared the winner with Helen Cooper taking second place and Charlotte Bell and Gemma Thomas sharing third spot.
This year’s fundraising will help a clean water initiative in Andhra Pradesh, India. The salon’s efforts can be supported at justgiving.com/ CuttingHouseAvedaEarthMonth.
