Wedding bells are set to ring at Yeadon Town Hall as BrassNeck Theatre gets ready for its next musical offering.
The Wedding Singer is based on the cult film of the same name starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore and set in the 1980s.
It tells the story of Robbie Hart, wannabe rock star and New Jersey’s favourite wedding singer. Robbie is the life of the party until his fiancee leaves him at the altar. Shot through the heart, he makes every wedding as disastrous as his own.
Director Royston Bayfield said that although the film is set to a soundtrack of Eighties classics, the stage version is far from being a jukebox musical.
“It’s true that people who love the film will love the musical, which follows the same plot, but that does not mean that the music takes care of the show,” he added.
“This production is shaping up to be one of the most challenging projects BrassNeck has taken on, particularly with the constraints of Yeadon Town Hall. The cast, as ever, have been working very hard but there has been much work done behind the scenes by our stage crew, wardrobe and props departments to make sure that the standard our audiences have come to expect is not compromised. I’m very excited about how the show is coming along already and I’m confident that it will leave audiences wanting more.”
Filled with humour, powerful 1980s-style music and the inevitable romance, The Wedding Singer is described as a sure-fire hit for all those who lived through the Eighties and for those who missed out.
It runs at Yeadon Town Hall from May 13 to 17 at 7.30pm nightly. Organisers say Friday and Saturday night performances are already almost sold out. Bookings can be made online at brassnecktheatre.com or by calling (0113) 2505011.
