BUILDERS have spent five days repairing holes in Otley Civic Centre roof.

After the town council made a desperate appeal to Leeds City Council to honour its responsibility as landlord, missing slates have been replaced and pigeon droppings removed from guttering.

Centre manager Martin Foy told councillors that a council surveyor had also looked inside the building to investigate possible damage to the inside caused by problems on the outside.

"There were lots of slates that needed replacing and some lead flashing was shot and needed to be replaced. It seems that was what had caused all the problems we had had in the main hall. They also cleared all the gutters out which were full of pigeon muck.

"We had an officer come out with a surveyor to inspect all the internal damage we have in the main hall and in the museum offices which have been caused because of the lack of repair on the outside of the building."

In addition, a problem with dry rot at the centre's main entrance had been dealt with.

l The town council agreed to work with the Save Otley Civic Centre group towards securing the refurbishment of the centre. It also agreed to produce updates on the progress of the refurbishment to be displayed for the public in the centre.
