PHOTOGRAPHER and honorary citizen of Otley, Edward Ted' Winpenny has died.

Mr Winpenny, who was born in Armley, Leeds, died peacefully at home in Otley on Saturday following a long illness.

A former staff photographer for the Daily Mail, in charge of the North, he was chairman of the Leeds branch of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and later an honorary life member.

He set up the family photography business Winpenny Photography after being made redundant in 1971, firstly in premises in Boroughgate and then at its present location in Wesley Street.

In Otley, he was a former president of Otley Rotary Club and helped set up the Otley Retired Mens Forum. He was also a member of the Otley Preservation Society and a member and past president of Otley Chamber of Trade for more than 30 years.

Mr Winpenny belonged to the Otley Manor Club, of which he was president, and was involved in Otley Little Theatre - of which he was an honorary life patron.

He also belonged to the Wharfedale Agricultural Society and a committee member of Otley Citizens Advice.

Associated with the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association for more than 50 years, he was recently awarded a 40 years service certificate in recognition of services to mountain rescue.

In recent years, he was made an honorary citizen of Otley by the town council and he also set up Otley First Responder Team.

Mr Winpenny leaves a wife, Hazel, who he married in 1954, a son, Christopher and daughter Vivian and two grandchildren, James and Helen.

His funeral service is due to take place on Monday at midday at All Saints Parish Church, Otley.
