GREEN minded children at Rawdon Littlemoor Primary School have won £100 for their school by collecting telephone directories.

Along with more than 40 other schools across Leeds, the Rawdon school collected old Yellow Pages directories in a recycling competition.

And after collecting an average of 2.8 directories per pupil, the school came third after Thorner Primary School and Rothwell Primary School.

The competition, run by Yellow Pages in partnership with the Woodland Trust and Leeds City Council, saw 13 tonnes of directories which will be recycled into cardboard.

Councillor Steve Smith, executive member responsible for recycling, said: "I'd like to congratulate all the schoolchildren, teachers and communities that took on the Yellow Woods Challenge and made it such a success. Schoolchildren are the recyclers of the future and this is a great scheme for them to take part in .

"Not only has this challenge helped stop 13 tonnes of old directories going into landfill, but hopefully the children will also continue this good practice of recycling at home too. I wish them all the best of luck for the national competition."
