GOING to the rubbish tip isn’t something that tops most people’s fun trips list.
It’s one of those duties that it’s natural to want to get over and done with as quickly as possible.
The new car sticker permit system being introduced by Leeds City Council this April, however, could change all that - at least for those residents unfortunate enough to live on ‘border territory’.
It’s easy enough to understand the logic behind the introduction of the resident permits, which are already in use in the neighbouring local authority areas.
Because up until now Leeds tips have been accepting ‘other people’s rubbish’ - or in the words of the city council itself, “effectively subsidising other councils for waste disposal”.
That may seem a petty, parochial point but in the current climate of ever-shrinking government grants local authorities really do have to watch every penny.
The big fly in the ointment with the idea, of course, lies with those aforementioned, unluckily located, residents such as those living on the ‘North Yorkshire’ side of Otley.
Let’s hope some kind of common-sense, cross-border solution like that being called for by Councillor Colin Campbell for such householders can be achieved.
