A NEW exhibition opened on Monday at The Gallery, at The Art Shop in Ilkley.
The exhibition of oil paintings by South African artist James Yates runs until March 28.
James (pictured) was born in Johannesburg in 1944, but grew up in the Cape. His talent was recognised at a very early age; by 11 he had sold his first picture and aged 13 was featured by the Cape Argus newspaper under the heading: “13-year-old school boy is successful artist”.
Following his education and national service James became a Sunday painter, while he took up a career in printing. However by 1966 he could no longer resist the painting urge, gave up printing and was mentored by Arthur English — a renowned South African photographer.
James has strong links to the UK — his father originated from Chesterfield, and his son with his English wife and young family live in Ilkley hence the local scenes in his repertoire.
