TWO cannabis farms have been raided in Yeadon in the space of three days.
Police dismantled a sophisticated small factory being run in the specially converted bedroom of a house on Enfield last Friday.
Then on Monday officers uncovered another farm on Raywood Close after a member of the public had raised concerns.
Two vehicles had driven off from the address but were stopped by traffic police, who then found a 60-plant set-up back at the property.
Two occupants from the Enfield house have been arrested and charged with cannabis production, while four men have been arrested in connection with the Raywood Close operation.
Inspector Richard Coldwell, who heads the Otley-based Outer North West Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “These were both quite significant cannabis growing operations.
“We had somewhere in the region of 60 plants being grown at Raywood Close, while at the Enfield address we’re looking at a probable yield of between £7,000 and £10,000 each time the crop was ready.
“They were both quite sophisticated farms with light tents, specialised lighting systems and hydroponics set up.
“The Raywood Close raid was thanks to community intelligence, Continued on page two while the Enfield one was down to some good police work.”
Saying the arrests will send out a strong message to existing and would-be cannabis growers, Insp Coldwell is also calling on residents to stay vigilant and play their part.
He said: “We will keep hitting cannabis farms for as long as they’re out there - it sends out a clear message that they won’t be tolerated and that we will take hard action every time.
“The penalties those who are responsible for them can face are quite severe, so cannabis growing is not an ‘easy option’.
“We will also be asking, as we have successfully done before, for action can be taken this time under the Proceeds of Crime Act to ensure any benefits the criminals have made from these farms are taken away.
“The police and crime commissioner can then arrange for the proceeds to instead be used to benefit the community.
“Everyone can play their part in fighting this problem and I would ask anybody who knows a house nearby that might seem a bit strange, with windows covered up, strong or unusual smells coming from it or odd comings and goings, to let us know.
“They can ring us up in full confidence and we will always look into it.”
Police said yesterday the four arrested for the Raywood Close operation have “now been bailed pending further inquires”.
