FOUR in five people across Shipley want Britain out of the European Union, a poll has revealed.
The question on the ballot paper read: Should the United Kingdom be part of the European Union. A total of 1,168 responses were recorded to the poll conducted by Shipley MP Philip Davies. A breakdown shows 21 papers were spoilt, leaving 1,147 – of which 914 (79.7 per cent) voted No and 233 (20.3 per cent) Yes.
Mr Davies said: “The result is quite clear, and I am grateful to those people who took part in this ballot.”
Mr Davies – a long standing campaigner for Britain to leave the EU – was the first MP to publicly call for Britain to withdraw from the EU in 2006, when he launched the Better Off Out group.
Mr Davies added: “Back in 1975 people thought they were voting for free trade but they actually got unlimited immigration into the UK from EU countries, they got billions of their taxes handed to Europe and ridiculous laws.”
