AN Irish priest hearing confession is told that he will be murdered one week later. That is the startling beginning of Calvary, Ilkley Film Society’s next presentation on Sunday, March 29, at Ilkley Playhouse (8pm).
In the week that follows, the priest tries to understand the death sentence passed on him, and struggles with his faith and with the difficulty of seeking help without violating the secrecy of the confessional. The Guard, the previous collaboration between writer-director John Michael McDonagh and actor Brendan Gleeson, was one of the hits of the Film Society’s season two years ago. This is a darker film, but with a strong vein of black humour, and is the latest in a series of films tackling abuses of religious power in Ireland.
Guest tickets for non-members of the Film Society cost £4 (£2 for students) and can be reserved by telephoning Richard Fort on 01535 653471. For further information go to: ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
