NEWS of Aireborough Rotarians abroad has been given in a report from their club.

While one couple have returned from Thailand another couple are having to wait for a flight home from New Zealand.

Aireborough Rotary Club spokesman Robert Mirfield said: “Three of our Rotarians and one Inner Wheel member who spend half the year on the other side of the world have had contrasting fortunes with Roger and Carol Ward safely back home from Thailand but Tony and Ann Scaife visiting family in Auckland having to wait till May for a flight home.

“Roger and Carol came into Rotary through having been invited to a Rotary meeting at the Chiang Mai International Rotary Club which helps support Burmese migrant workers and their children who are receiving medical treatment in Thailand.

“Carol had spent some of her time knitting teddy bears and visited the hospital with Rotarian Jerry Nelson and his wife Maliwan to hand the bears over to sick children.

“Tony attends Takapuna Rotary Club which runs a project focussing on children with serious health conditions on smaller Pacific Islands coming to the Starship children’s hospital in Auckland for treatment. They also collect ‘e waste’ from the community - computers, printers, TVs and microwaves passing them on to a sheltered employment workshop where they are broken down and passed on to specialist scrap firms. The commercial scrap price for a computer power unit is doubled if the electrical cord has been cut off first.”

Donations for the Egg Hunt have been given to the Lister Hill’s Foodbank.
