SCHOOLDAYS in the first half of the 20th century can be seen in these photographs from Aireborough Historical Society.
The pictures were taken at the school which started life as Yeadon and Guiseley Secondary and went on to become Aireborough Grammar.
The building was opened in 1910 and played a pivotal role in the life of the local community until it finally closed its doors in 1991.
It was built after representatives of Yeadon, Guiseley, Rawdon and Menston got together in 1906 to discuss the idea of a secondary school. Work began in 1907 and it was opened on September 14 in 1910.
To start with the new school had just 71 pupils. The first headmaster was J E Dalton, and he was succeeded nine years later by W Rigby.
It became Aireborough Grammar School in 1937 after Yeadon, Guiseley and Rawdon were amalgamated to form the new district of Aireborough.
The school was closed in 1991 and was then demolished, to be replaced with a housing estate.
But a reminder of its past remains in carved stones from the school being set into the wall of the estate. The names of two of the school’s houses are also remembered in the street names Coverley Rise and Fairfax Grove.
Former students include cricketers Hedley Verity and Brian Close, singer-songwriter Marc Almond, rugby union player Nigel Melville and Vice Admiral Sir Richard Ibbotson, who commanded British Forces Falklands Islands.
A wonderful photograph from 1922 shows Yeadon and Guiseley Secondary School hockey team.
On the back row left to right are - Winnie Sedgwick, Frances Pritchett, unknown, Emily Cribb, Kathy Haley.
Seated left to right are Kitty Burge, unknown, Mary Cribb, unknown. In front left to right are Grace Verity and Daisy Crowe.
Also from 1922 is a picture of the school football team. On the back row, second left is Towers. On the right end of the middle row is Henson, at the front on the left is B Bateman.
A photograph of the school football team dating to 1950/51 was donated to AHS by Peter Wigglesworth.
The society says the names on the back of the picture do not match the people on the front.
It is not just sports teams who can be seen in these photographs - theatrical performances are also captured for posterity.
A production of Shakespeare's Macbeth was caught on camera in 1938. Duncan Binns played the part of Banquo, Jeremy Swales was Macbeth and Margaret Wilson was Lady Macbeth. The name Emerson was also given with the image.
A photograph from 1952 shows some of the cast of HMS Pinafore by Gilbert and Sullivan. It was donated to Aireborough Historical Society by Susan and Henry Allinson
An extremely early photograph of the school was taken in 1915 and shows a group of teachers. It was donated by Tony Watkinson.
An image from 1939 shows a sixth form garden party. It was donated by Liz Pinder, whose father George Crompton taught at South View School and at St Peters School, Rawdon. He retired in 1984.
The names were supplied with the photograph but they are not in order.
They are Mildred Smith, Jack Machell, Alan Kirkbright, Duncan Binns, Jim Swales, Dilys Ackroyd, Mr and Mrs Sutcliffe, Miss Caridge, Mr Clarke, George Crompton, Cicely Geldart, Eunice Latham, Kathleen Adams, Barbara Carris, Jean Murray, Brian Dixon and Jimmy Dixon.
