STAMP Collectors in Leeds have received a prestigious International Award.

Leeds Philatelic Society is the first local society in Britain to gain the award from the Federation of European Philatelic Societies.

The award recognises the work done by the society in promoting the study, knowledge, application, and advancement of philately in the city for more than 131 years.

It also praises the way in which the society continued its activities throughout the difficulties faced over the last 18 months.

From the first lockdown in March 2020, members contributed articles and illustrations to more than 20 bulletins, circulated by email to all members. These bulletins were then replaced in June of last year, by a series of more than 25 meetings.

Unable to meet in person, the society met virtually. At these meetings society members and “visitors” presented colourful and entertaining displays throughout the next 12 months

The award will be presented to Richard Smith, the secretary of the society, at the ABPS Great Britain Philatelic Congress in Harrogate on Friday, September 24. Richard will also give the keynote lecture at that Congress when he will outline ways in which societies need to adapt and change to face future challenges.

Additionally, Richard, from Horsforth, will receive an award of merit from the ABPS, in recognition of his leadership given to Leeds Philatelic Society over this difficult and unprecedented time. Visit www.leedsps.org.uk to find out more about the group.

The Leeds Philatelic Society is one of the oldest in the country. Founded in 1890 it celebrated its125th anniversary in 2015.

The society's website says: "If you are interested in stamps, postal history or postcards, this is the place for you. No previous knowledge or expertise required, our members range from new collectors to those with a lifetime's interest and experience."

It adds: "It has been very important for us to support our members during the coronavirus pandemic, and to keep our community together. We continued our meetings online using Zoom when face-to-face meetings were impossible, but are now planning to resume normal meetings in September 2021.

"Our Society has one of the best philatelic libraries in the country, which is housed on loan with the Leeds Central Reference Library. Members of the public can view books on request, but only our members can borrow books to study at home.

"We hold a yearly competition with trophies to be won, and an annual dinner for members with their partners and guests to enjoy a sociable night out with a good meal. Each year we sponsor a two day Stamp Fair at Pudsey with more than thirty dealers attending."
