BURLEY Scouts and Guides HQ formed an impressive backdrop to Burley-in-Wharfedale’s very own Scarecrow Oscars.

Organised as part of the Burley Summer Festival 2021, the ever-popular Scarecrow Trail attracted over 70 residential entries and 11 entries in the community and business category.

A street prize was presented to those residents who took part collectively in transforming their street into a very imaginative sea of scarecrows.

During Festival week, hundreds of families and individuals had the opportunity to spend time looking at scarecrows decked out in Nursery Rhyme attire.

From Humpty Dumpty to five little freckled frogs, a host of nursery rhyme characters peeked out from doorways, gardens and drives and even shop windows. Residents and visitors were treated to a tour of childhood nostalgia, as well as picking their winners.

This year’s organisation category was won by Burley Scouts and Guides with their magnificent display of scarecrows at Peel Place.

Helen Haskins, Rainbow Leader said: “Each child there that morning made at least one scarecrow. Children from most sections took part it was a truly team effort with everyone involved. The various sections of our organisation, Scouts, Rainbows, Cubs, Brownies, Guides, Beavers and Rangers all worked hard and the emphasis was on promoting imagination and having fun.”

The very important residential category was won by the Ashton family with their superb adaptation of Old King Cole complete with violin player.

Best street award went to the residents of West View who transformed their street into a nursery rhyme wonderland.

Chair of the Burley Summer Festival Jan Lepley said: “What a great year. We would like to thank everyone who took the time and effort to take part. We would also like to thank all the people who voted for their favourite.

“With the 13th Summer Festival at an end the committee is already starting to plan for 2022.

“The first planning meeting is on Thursday 21st October at the aptly named scarecrow room at the Red Lion at 8pm.

“The committee is always on the lookout for new faces to help out in organising a wide range of activities like the vintage car show, opera evening and many more.

“If you have an idea for a new activity to add, come along to the meeting or visit burleysummerfestival.org.”
