ILKLEY Film Society opens the second half of its season with the outstanding French drama Portrait Of A Lady On Fire on Sunday, January 9 (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse).
Winner of two awards at Cannes, director/writer Celine Sciamma’s visually ravishing film takes place on an island in Brittany at the end of the 18th century where artist Marianne arrives to carry out a commission to paint a portrait of Heloise, a young woman who is to be married off to an Italian nobleman against her will. As Heloise has previously and repeatedly refused to sit for a portrait by other artists, Marianne has to use subterfuge to fulfil the commission, posing as a hired companion and using outdoor walks to memorise Heloise’s features in order to paint them in secret.
With outstanding performances from Noemie Merlant and Adele Haenel the film develops into an intense and haunting tale which remains long in the memory. All the outdoor scenes were shot on location on the Quiberon peninsula in Brittany.
Non-members are welcome as guests but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to reserve tickets. In accordance with current regulations and Playhouse policy, face masks must be worn.
