IT'S not a sight you would normally expect to see in Otley - and anyone who remembers this striking scene is being asked to take part in a local project.
Otley Courthouse and Leeds 2023: Year of Culture, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, are hoping to find memories of the elephants which came to Otley on the train and paraded through the streets on their way to the circus ground.
A spokesperson said: "Do you remember when the circus elephants came to Otley? Or do you know someone else who does?
"Do you like sewing, knitting or art and craft work? Would you like to help preserve the memories by making, drawing or painting pictures of elephants?"
Storyteller and artist Vickie Orton will be researching memories and holding workshops for children and adults. The results will be exhibited at Otley Courthouse from February 20 to 28. Contact Laura Barker-Bey, director@otleycourthouse.org.uk to find out more.
