A VIRTUAL walk to raise money for beds for children in poverty has surged past its original destination within the first two weeks.

Aireborough Rotary decided to stage its virtual Leeds/Paris Walk for Zarach, which helps children in need in Leeds - and so far participants have raised £1,000.

Rotary spokesman Robert Mirfield said: "Since the Leeds Tour de France 2017 start line hosted the launch, enthusiastic walkers will now take on the rest of that tour’s itinerary. With 820 miles already behind them, donations have already ensured seven more beds and bedding bundles will be delivered by Zarach.

"Members have logged up miles in Thailand, Greece, Iceland and Tenerife as well as at more local venues including Fewston Reservoir, Roundhay Park, the grounds of Harewood House and Nostell Priory, Alderley Edge and the banks of the Leeds/Liverpool Canal often accompanied by Club mascot Montague Bear.

"Donations can still be made on the Just Giving page below with grateful thanks already going to the many enthusiastic supporters.

Zarach was founded by Bex Wilson, a Deputy Headteacher at an inner city primary school in Leeds, after a pupil told her he was always tired because he didn't have a bed.
