OTLEY Lions Club CIO has donated £240 to fund raisers to help provide basic sanitation to some of the world's poorest people.

The money has gone to a group at St. Helena's Caravan Park, on Otley Old Road, who have been raising funds to twin their toilet block. By donating to twin a toilet, they will help fund a project in a poor community that will enable families to build a basic toilet, have access to clean water and learn about hygiene – a vital combination that saves lives especially since the pandemic.

Campaigners say1.7 billion people don’t have somewhere safe and hygienic to go to the toilet and the lack of basic facilities makes women and girls a target for sexual attack as they go to the toilet in the open, late at night. Every day, more than 700 children under five die from diseases linked to unsafe water, sanitation and poor hygiene and one in four people around the world lack safe drinking water.

A spokesperson for Otley Lions Club said: "Having previously supported other initiatives to provide water and sanitation the club felt this was a worthy cause and deserved our support."
