IN a change from the published programme, Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday 12th June is the American indie film Minari (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
It’s the story of a Korean family who move to rural Arkansas in the 1980s where the father, Jacob, intends to grow Korean produce to sell to restaurants (minari is a Korean vegetable). His wife gets work sexing chickens at a local hatchery and so they bring her mother over from South Korea to look after the children. Jacob finds that she is far from his expectations of what a grandmother should be.
Nominated for 7 Academy Awards and 6 BAFTAs, US-born director Lee Isaac Chung’s film secured a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for veteran Korean actress Youn Yuh-Jung’s unforgettable portrayal of the grandmother.
The film change was forced by the unavailability of the programmed French film La Belle Epoque, which is only available on disc in France and Italy, in both cases without English subtitles! In line with the Film Society’s current policy on American films, Minari will be screened with hard-of-hearing subtitles.
Non-members are welcome as guests but should phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to reserve tickets (£4). The society is currently preparing its programme for next season and prospective new members are invited to leave contact details via the website at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
