THE uplifting British comedy-drama Limbo is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday 30th October (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
On a remote Scottish island, four refugees are sharing a dilapidated house while they await the results of their asylum applications. Omar is a professional musician from Syria, Farhad an Afghan with a Freddie Mercury obsession, and one of their African housemates is convinced that a career as a Premier League footballer awaits him. Their reception from the local people ranges from unconscious stereotyping to well-meaning but absurd support (a “cultural awareness” session laid on by local volunteers makes for priceless viewing !)
Writer/director Ben Sharrock’s second feature film has received almost universal praise and won festival awards in three different continents but its release and distribution were hit by the Covid epidemic. Now local film lovers have a chance to see on a big screen this timely reminder of the moving human stories that lie behind the tabloid headlines.
