REMEMBRANCE Day will be marked across the district with a number of parades and services to enable residents to pay their respects to those who lost their lives in the first and second world wars and in other conflicts around the world.
The Remembrance events in Otley are: Friday, November 11: a short service in the Remembrance Garden at 11am. On Sunday The Royal British Legion will gather at the Remembrance garden at 11am. There will be a parade commencing at 2pm on Sunday at Station Road. This will march to the Bridge Church, where the Service of Remembrance will take place at 2.30pm. Following the Service the parade will march to the Remembrance Garden for the laying of the wreaths.
The Remembrance Service at Burley-in-Wharfedale on Sunday will once again be held in the open air by the war memorial in Grange Park. It will start at 10.45am and will be led by the Methodist Minister, the Rev Tim Perkins.
It will be attended by the local uniformed organisations including Air Cadets, Scouts, Guides, Cubs and Brownies. It is hoped to have the service streamed into the Methodist Church for those unable to stand outdoors.
In extreme weather conditions the service will be moved in to the Methodist Church. Following the service current and ex-forces personnel have been invited for tea and coffee at the Red Lion.
The village's Poppy Appeal volunteers will hold the last of their three outdoor Poppy Stalls in the park on Saturday morning from 9.30am. As well as Poppy items they will be selling Christmas items, have a cake stall and be running a tombola.
The Guiseley branch of the Royal British Legion is 100 years this November. A two minute silence will take place at 11am on Friday, November 11 and will be attended by local schools, with the Last Post played by Guiseley School. A Remembrance service and parade will take place on Sunday at St Oswalds Church 10am. There will be a wreath laying service at 11am at the Cross, Guiseley Memorial Garden, Towngate. To take part in the parade meet at The Guide Hut, The Green at 9.15am for a 9.30am march off led by 2168 A.T.C.
In Yeadon on Sunday, starting at 10.15am there will be a shortened morning service at Yeadon Methodist Church. This will be followed at 11am by a short Service of Remembrance at the War Memorial Stone situated just outside the Church. Everyone is welcome to attend either or both of these services to remember and pay tribute to those who have served in both World Wars and other conflicts.
In Menston there will be a Remembrance Service on Sunday at 10.45am at Kirklands, Main Street. This will be an outdoor event but there will be seating inside the hall for those wishing to be inside, plus refreshments. The service will be relayed into the hall.
In Bramhope there will be an Act of Remembrance on Friday, November 11 at 11am at the Memorial Garden. This will be a short service led by Reverend Roger Smith. All are welcome to attend. The Remembrance Parade will take place on Sunday. The parade will commence at the Village Hall at 10.45am, moving along Old Lane, across the Cross, down Eastgate to the Memorial Garden on Breary Lane. A short service will take place at the Memorial Garden commencing at 10.55am until 11.15am. A service will then be held at the Methodist Church (opposite the Memorial Garden). All are welcome to attend. There will be temporary road closures in place in Bramhope between 10.40am and 11.30am in order for the Remembrance Sunday Parade to take place.
In Horsforth the Royal British Legion and the town council invite all to participate in their parade march on Sunday, meeting at 10am at the junction of Broadgate Lane/Stanhope Drive and the Remembrance Service at Horsforth Cenotaph at 10.45am, followed by refreshments at The Willows.
In Rawdon, a traditional service of remembrance will be held from 10am on Sunday at St Peter’s Church, Town Street, with two minutes’ silence at 11am then the laying of wreaths at the memorial at the church.
Later in the day in Rawdon, a parade will assemble at 2.30pm on Micklefield Road with a wreath laid at the Cenotaph, then the parade will walk to Littlemoor Memorial Stone for a second wreath to be laid at around 3pm.
In Ilkley a ceremony will take place on Sunday at 3pm at the Memorial Gardens, Ilkley, and will be led by the Rev Shannon DeLaureal. All are welcome at the Memorial Gardens and there will be an opportunity to lay your wreath at the end if you wish.
The ceremony will be preceded by the traditional parade starting from Whitton Croft Road. This will include dignitaries, members of the armed forces and uniformed and civic organisations. Participants in the parade will assemble from 2.20pm, and at 2.40 pm will progress in front of the Town Hall, along the Grove and into the Memorial Gardens to assemble in time for the 3pm start. A rolling road closure will be in place.
All are welcome to support the parade and to attend the event in the Memorial Gardens. A collection will be held for the Royal British Legion.
In Addingham, the main remembrance service will start at St Peter’s Church at 10am on Sunday, concluding with a procession to the war memorial.
