'THE pen is mightier than the sword', first written by novelist/playwright Edward Bulwer-Lytton in 1839 indicating that the written word is a more effective tool for communication than violence.
So it is that Amnesty International champions a campaign 'Write for Rights' inviting people to write to governments on behalf of prisoners of conscience appealing for their release, of justice and improved conditions while in custody. At the same time, greetings cards and letters of support with words of encouragement are sent to victims and/or their their families.
