“THERE’S no business like showbusiness” as the old theatrical maxim goes. This is exactly what members of Menston Thespians society have experienced over the last couple of months.
Intense rehearsals, dedicated dance and song routines, the slapping of paint onto theatrical canvas and the tweaking of technical equipment all combine to make it a panto to remember! Now the cast and crew simply say, to the Wharfedale public, on with the show.
This year’s annual pantomime is the classic children’s story of Alice in Wonderland and the chosen script from the enchanted pen of Tom Whalley, has all the hall marks of what is to be expected from the most traditional of British institutions.
The pantomime cleverly weaves characters from the Lewis Carroll tale of delightful nonsense into the traditional elements that Panto aficionados expect. From the bumbling duo of Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum to the hissable nasty knave of hearts, every expectation is catered for. Expect a wide range of audience participation. Delightful dames, stunning sets, spectacular song and dance routines, corny gags and preposterous props. Slapstick is also not forgotten with a crazy kitchen scene, haunted dungeon and chaotic croquet competition.Hilarious!
The Menston based group has a very talented four-piece band which will belt out audience favourites from Queen to the Spice Girls, not forgetting the Lion King. There is even a song from My Fair Lady incorporated.
Opening night is always special but this year it is extra fun! On Thursday, February 16th children (and big kids) of any age are invited to come and along in their favourite fancy dress in order to receive a treat. Treats also await the adults too as licensed bar ‘The Rabbit Hole’ will be serving drinks at every performance.
Keith Galvin, the group publicity officer said: "Everyone has worked very hard since October to make this popular story into an iconic pantomime to remember. We are also very lucky to have such a talented, dedicated team of understudies. Covid has taught us that they are a vital part of any production. The creativity, good humour and commitment of the entire team has been a joy to behold”
This pantomime will take the entire family on a magical trip to Wonderland. Production dates are Thursday, February 16th (Grand Opening Night) to Saturday, February 18th at 7.15pm each evening at Kirklands Community Centre, Menston with a Saturday matinee at 2pm.
Tickets are now available from menstonthespians.co.uk/tickets or from the box office on 07764753731.
