UP to 0.5 hectares or room for up to 500 trees is being urgently sought by the Rotary Clubs of Harrogate and Ripon for planting this spring. It is part of a programme to plant 25,000 British Native Hardwoods in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), of which nearly 21,000 trees in 35 different sites have been planted since the scheme started in 2007.
Rotarian Charles Dickinson said: "We will supply the ‘whip’ size trees, stakes and shelters free of charge and plant them, but we ask that the landowner pays for the VAT and delivery cost.
"We would like to plant them by mid-March, but could plant them in February/March 2024. We will arrange for an officer from the Nidderdale AONB to select the types of tree most suitable, and this will be agreed with the landowner.
"The ideal site is one which cannot be used for normal agricultural purposes such as being wet, or has rocky outcrops, perhaps in a valley, or an area where bracken has taken over (though this may need some remedial work before planting), underplanting or extending an existing wood."
