A SMALL Yorkshire bakery is gearing up for a flood of orders for Coronation Quiche, the dish that has been specially created to mark the big day.
Bondgate Bakery in Otley has so far received scores of orders for the quiche and is preparing its bakers up for a busy few days leading up to the Coronation on May 6 and the street parties that are expected to be held to mark the royal event.
Bakery owner Sally Hinchliffe said: “We’re well known locally for the quality of our quiches and we’re pleased that people have been asking us if we’ll be making the King’s and Camilla’s version.
“We’ve already started making some as there’s quite a bit of interest in how the quiche tastes. To be fair, it’s gone down very well. We’ve also done our own meat version containing locally sourced ham as the Coronation Quiche recipe is a vegetarian offering,” she added.
“Of course, most people will want their quiches for Coronation day itself or over that weekend so the last few days leading up to May 6 are going to be very busy for us,” she said.
Bondgate Bakery has been in existence for almost 40 years, serving the people of Otley.
The idea of creating a dish that people across the country can have to mark the Coronation was started in 1953 when Coronation Chicken was invented to celebrate the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II.
This time the King and Queen have settled on a quiche.
Whether it will have the same longevity remains to be seen. Some critics have described the ingredients list, which includes spinach and broad beans as uninspiring, but Mrs Hinchliffe disagrees.
“I think it’s a great recipe,” she said. “It uses lots of ingredients which are in season and I know that’s the kind of thing that appeal to King Charles. We’re getting very positive feedback.
“That being said, not everybody wants to eat vegetarian, which is why we’ve also done a meat version containing local ham,” she added.
The bakery is used to producing large volumes of products for special events, particularly at Christmas so, they say, managing large numbers of orders for the quiche will not be an issue.
“We’re starting to see a significant increase in orders as we get closer to the big day. We’re full expecting it to be a great weekend of celebrations,” she said.
