A PEDESTRIAN suffered serious injuries in a collision with a heavy goods vehicle on a major route in Guiseley.

It happened at about 10.10am today (November 5) outside Philip Kirkby Jeweller in Otley Road and involved an 88-year-old pedestrian and a white Scania HGV lorry, which was travelling towards Menston.

The pedestrian was taken to hospital with serious leg and hip injuries. These are being considered as life-threatening due to his age.

The lorry driver was spoken to by officers at the scene.

The A65 (Otley Road) in Guiseley was shut following the collision.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "Shortly after 10.13am today, police were contacted by the ambulance service to report a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a heavy goods vehicle, on Otley Road in Guiseley, Leeds.

"A man in his eighties was taken to hospital with serious injuries.  

"Road closures are in place at this time, whilst enquiries remain ongoing."

One traffic alert reported: "The A65 Otley Road is blocked both ways and there is slow traffic due to an accident from B6153 Park Road to Springfield Road."

The road closure has diverted bus services in the area.

 

Flyer Buses apologised to its customers for the inconvenience.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw the movements of either the lorry or the pedestrian immediately prior to it, is asked to contact Roads Policing on 101, or by using the livechat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website.

Anyone who has dash cam footage which may assist is also asked to make contact.
