A Rawdon tennis player has made it to the Wimbledon championships – but you won’t see her on Centre Court.

Twenty-year-old Caroline Mount is working for computer company IBM at the event which reaches its climax weekend.

The former Guiseley School pupil is one of 40 data entry staff needed each year to analyse each shot played in the 600 or so matches in the championship fortnight.

Each fully-trained member of staff needs to know the game in detail and has to work with speed to ensure that an accurate record of the games is sent out immediately and preserved for later analysis.

Caroline, who has just graduated from High Point University, North Carolina, USA, with a degree in business management and French, is also a skilled junior tennis player.

Her experience and feel for the game is just as important as her training when it comes to recognising drop shots, lobs, volleys and backhand passes.

The computer company sends the captured data around the world in an instant, keeping on-site broadcasters, media and tennis fans up to date with the latest scores and statistics. Detailed analytical reports for the players are also available as soon as each match is over.

Caroline said: “As a player myself, I know how valuable it is to be able to see at a glance the key points in a match and to be able to analyse specific strengths and weaknesses, not only of my own, but also of my next opponent.”

Caroline was at university on a tennis and academic scholarship. After returning to her home in Layton Park Croft she continued to play for Huddersfield Tennis Club.
