Prescot Cables 2 Guiseley 0

Guiseley's inconsistent form continued when they travelled to Prescot on Saturday. Against a side they had beaten 3-1 at home in December they finished goalless and pointless putting a dent in their aspirations for promotion from the UniBond Premier Division.

Guiseley were at best under-par and at worst second best, especially in the first-half.

With Tom Marsden out injured Scott Jackson returned to the starting line up but there was no room on the subs' bench for the returning Craig Hall with the bench places going to James Hanson, Paul Collins and Liam Tuck.

Guiseley made a sluggish start and it was 21 minutes before their first real chance was created with Robert Pell heading over.

Prescot took the lead in the 29th minute when Carl Connolly netted from a corner.

Pell had an effort saved in the 35th minute and then in the 41st minute Jackson had a goal disallowed for offside. Jackson appeared level when he moved and it was one of those tight decisions that haunt clubs. Had they turned around level it could have made a difference.

After the break they gave a better account of themselves but failed to find a cutting edge.

Pell had a shot deflected wide and good work by Nathan Hay saw his excellent cross headed goalwards by Sam Denton but his effort was saved.

Midway through the second-half though Guiseley's hopes were ended when Prescot netted their second goal from the penalty spot.

Goalkeeper Steve Dickinson had raced off his line to challenge for a through ball and a forward went down.

It was the assistant referee who flagged for the offence as the referee was behind the play like many of the players after the punt forward.

Mark Duffey stepped forward to send the resulting penalty past Dickinson but it was eight minutes later when the penny finally dropped that it was not Guiseley's day.

Skipper Richard Dunning fired in a testing cross that saw two shots blocked in a melee in the home area.

The rebound found substitute James Hanson, who saw his shot blocked on the line, and then Liam Green shot the loose ball over the bar.

After that a Hanson shot found the side-netting and then Jackson fired over in the final minute.

Guiseley will be hoping for better things at home to Ashton United on Saturday (3pm).

Guiseley: Dickinson; Hay, Sturdy, Denton, Ellis, Serrant; Green, Dunning, Jackson; Pell, Knight. Subs: Hanson, Collins, Tuck.
