Mark Bower is targeting two more wins for his Guiseley team to secure a place in the Skrill North promotion play-offs.
Tuesday night’s 2-0 home win over Harrogate Town was their eighth-successive midweek victory and took the Lions back into fifth place with three games to play.
But the battle is far from over and Bower says: “I thought initially that 70 points would be enough to get into the play offs but we already have 71 and still haven’t secured a place.
“We need to win two more games as Hednesford, Boston and ourselves are battling for the final two places in the play offs.
“We have our destiny in our own hands. If we can keep winning then a place is ours, but we cannot look too far ahead.”
The first objective for Guiseley, who have surprised many people by winning all the games they had in hand after the wet weather earlier in the year, is to overcome a Colwyn Bay side who have always proved stubborn opponents at Nethermoor on Saturday.
After that, Guiseley go to Workington on Monday before rounding off their roller-coaster season with another home match against Gloucester on Saturday week.
Bower said: “I know it as old cliché but we have to take each game as it comes. First we must try and get three points against Colwyn Bay then we have to do the same thing at Workington on Monday.
“I know it won’t be easy because Colwyn Bay are always a side who give us a tough game. Like us they like to pass the ball around and play good football.”
Workington are at the bottom of the league but have achieved some surprise results like a recent win over in-form Boston.
“You can’t take anything for granted in this league,” said Bower who will assess the fitness of striker Alex Johnson and midfieldman Wayne Brooksby after both picked up ankle injuries against Harrogate.
“There have been some strange results recently. We beat Telford 6-1 then were disappointed to draw 3-3 at lowly Oxford City who then went and defeated Telford before losing heavily to Gainsborough.
“You cannot take anything for granted and it is up to us to concentrate on our own game and the things we can control rather than worry about what is going on elsewhere.
“The players showed great character on Tuesday to bounce back after the defeat at Hednesford and that says a lot about them.
“I was particularly pleased with how Danny Forrest and Michael Potts slotted in when Alex Johnson and Wayne Brooksby went off.
“Injuries are something you have to live with and the performances of Danny and Michael showed the sort of quality we have in our squad.
“They have had to be incredibly patient in waiting for their chance. You would have thought with all the games we had to catch up that they would have had more game time, but it hasn’t worked out that way.
“We have been fortunate to be able to field a settled team which has kept them on the sidelines.
“It was really good to see them come on and play their part in what was an important win for us.
“They are good players and I know that if I have to call on them they will respond like they did on Tuesday. It is important that we have players with that attitude in the squad.”
